The United States has imposed sanctions on four Indian companies for their alleged involvement in the sale and transportation of Iranian petroleum products. The move, announced on Monday, is part of Washington’s broader crackdown on Iran’s energy sector, which it claims funds destabilizing activities.

According to statements from the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and the State Department, the sanctioned Indian entities are Flux Maritime LLP, BSM Marine LLP, Austenship Management Private Limited, and Cosmos Lines Incorporation.

Cosmos Lines has been blacklisted for allegedly transporting Iranian petroleum products, while the other three firms are accused of handling the commercial and technical management of vessels engaged in Iranian oil and petroleum trade.

US Treasury official Scott Bessent stated that Iran relies on a clandestine network of vessels, intermediaries, and facilitators to sell its oil and generate funds for its military operations and proxy groups. He warned that entities engaging in Iranian oil transactions face significant sanctions risks due to the sweeping restrictions imposed on Tehran.

Despite stringent sanctions, Iran continues to sell petroleum through complex methods, including ship-to-ship transfers beyond port jurisdictions. Washington alleges that Tehran funnels these revenues into regional militant groups and its military.

In addition to the four Indian firms, the US has also sanctioned companies based in the UAE, Hong Kong, and China for their involvement in Iranian oil sales and transportation. The National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and Iran Oil Terminals Company have also been placed under restrictions.

US sanctions typically include trade bans, asset freezes, and financial restrictions, cutting off targeted firms from the global banking system. The latest measures reinforce Washington’s aggressive stance against Iran, adding to an already extensive list of sanctioned entities worldwide.

Liberty News’ international correspondent Russia remains the most heavily sanctioned country following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The US also enforces various economic restrictions on individuals and organizations from Iran, North Korea, China, and other nations.
