The US State Department has praised a group of courageous women from the July mass uprising, nominating them for the prestigious Madeleine Albright Honorary Group Award. Their bravery and leadership in the 2024 pro-democracy movement have earned international recognition.

During a press briefing on Monday (March 31), US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce commended the July uprising women for their efforts in shaping a brighter future for all.

When asked about the recognition of Bangladeshi women for their role in the 2024 movement against what was referred to as the “fascist Hasina government,” Bruce responded, “I will address the International Women of Courage Award but will not comment on the political nature of Bangladesh.” She emphasized that the award acknowledges exceptional women worldwide for their bravery, leadership, and commitment to justice, human rights, and women’s empowerment.

The 2025 ceremony, hosted by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and former First Lady Melania Trump, will honor eight outstanding women along with the Madeleine Albright Honorary Group IWOC Award recipients. Since its inception in 2007, over 200 women from 90+ countries have received this honor. US diplomatic missions worldwide nominate candidates, with the final selection made by senior State Department officials.

Following the ceremony, awardees will participate in the International Visitor Leadership Program in Washington, DC, and extended sessions in Los Angeles, where they will engage with American women leaders to discuss strategies for advancing women’s empowerment globally.

Interim Government Acknowledges Honorees
Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, congratulated the award-winning women. In a statement, he hailed them as “symbols of extraordinary courage” and commended their leadership during the historic July-August student-led mass uprising.

“You not only stood as a symbol of resistance but also brought hope during turbulent times. Your courage and determination continue to inspire countless individuals worldwide,” Yunus stated. He further emphasized that their sacrifice exemplifies the relentless pursuit of justice and has paved the way for a brighter and more just future for Bangladesh.
