US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Washington is set to hold talks with Iran next week, with a potential agreement on Tehran’s nuclear programme on the table.
“We’re going to talk to them next week with Iran, we may sign an agreement, I don’t know,” Trump told reporters.
The announcement follows days of heightened tensions after US and Israeli airstrikes targeted Iranian nuclear facilities. On Tuesday, Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation chief Mohammad Eslami said the country had “taken the necessary measures” to continue its nuclear programme and was assessing the damage.
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi confirmed on Wednesday that while some infrastructure was damaged, it could be rebuilt. “The reconstruction is not impossible. This is work that Iran knows how to do,” Grossi said during a press briefing in Austria.
Meanwhile, sources cited by US media said the recent strikes had not fully destroyed Iran’s centrifuges or its stockpile of enriched uranium, according to the Defense Intelligence Agency.
