Colombian President Gustavo Petro has accused the United States of breaching international law after Washington revoked his visa in response to his criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza.
In a social media post, Petro said, “I no longer have a visa to travel to the United States. I don’t care. I don’t need a visa … because I’m not only a Colombian citizen but a European citizen, and I truly consider myself a free person in the world.”
He added, “Revoking it for denouncing genocide shows the US no longer respects international law.”
The US State Department defended its decision, accusing Petro of making “reckless and incendiary” statements. During the UN General Assembly, Petro spoke to pro-Palestinian demonstrators outside UN headquarters, calling for an international armed force to “liberate Palestinians” and urging US soldiers to “disobey the orders of Trump” and instead “obey the orders of humanity.”
Colombia’s foreign affairs ministry denounced the move, saying it contradicts the UN’s core principles, which include protecting freedom of expression and safeguarding the independence of member states participating in UN events.
The development adds to growing tensions between Bogotá and Washington. Earlier this year, Petro suspended deportation flights of migrants from the US and alleged that US officials were involved in plotting a coup against his government.
