BNP’s Senior Joint Secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has stated that the use of firearms to suppress movements or sabotage political programs must be permanently banned. He expressed concerns over how Sheikh Hasina used the police to kill people with bullets, warning against a repeat of such actions in the country.
On Monday (February 3), Rizvi made these remarks after paying tribute to BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, with leaders of Munshiganj District BNP.
Rizvi emphasized the need to ensure free and fair elections and the rule of law in the country. He stated that such brutal rule as under Sheikh Hasina should never be allowed again. He also accused Hasina of seeking to bring back her brutal regime and of inciting unrest and conspiracy from a neighboring country. He claimed that after failing to get a response from the public, Hasina had resorted to declaring strikes and blockades online.
Rizvi further remarked, “Where are your youth league, student league, and the criminal gangs? The ones who shot and killed people like birds, killed children, and killed BNP leaders and activists? The people of Bangladesh will not tolerate you anymore. They demand justice for all your wrongdoings.”
He emphasized the need for a reform that would prevent any form of oppression from taking away people’s rights, adding that the freedom of expression should not be curtailed.
The former student leader also mentioned that some of their advisers get irritated and make various comments when the government is criticized. He advised that if they cannot tolerate criticism, they should leave their advisory positions and join a political party. He also questioned, “If the price of rice goes up, will we not criticize it? Will we not talk about the deterioration in law and order? Will we not speak about the rising prices of daily essentials?”
Rizvi claimed that the market syndicates are still active and said, “I don’t see any sincerity from the government in curbing the syndicates.” He also pointed out that law and order have not improved, and that theft, robbery, and murders have increased in the country. He urged for immediate action to address these issues.
Present at the time were Mirjanur Rahman Sinha, the Convener of Munshiganj District BNP, and Member Secretary Mahiyuddin Ahmed, among others.
