Newly appointed Vice Chancellor of Barishal University, Dr. Mohammad Taufiq Alam, made a symbolic gesture by unlocking the chained residence gate and handing the chain to students, urging them to restrain him if he ever commits injustice.
Dr. Mohammad Taufiq Alam, a professor from the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Rajshahi University, officially joined Barishal University on Thursday afternoon. Upon arrival, he greeted teachers, staff, and students, and then proceeded with students to unlock the gate of his official residence, which had been sealed during a month-long student protest.
Holding up the removed chain, he said, “I’m handing you this chain—if you ever witness injustice from me, lock me up again.”
Earlier, during a brief interaction with students in the VC’s office, Dr. Alam remarked, “Since the government appointed me in a critical time, I will do my utmost to elevate Barishal University in terms of quality, reputation, and global ranking.”
His appointment followed the removal of Professor Sucharita Sharmin from the VC position after sustained student protests. The Ministry of Education issued the appointment order for Dr. Alam on the same day with presidential approval.
