Despite an improvement in the supply of vegetables in markets across Bogura and other northern districts, retail prices have not decreased.
Most vegetables are still being sold for no less than Tk60 to Tk100 per kilogram, putting low- and middle-income consumers under increasing pressure.
Traders say that although winter vegetables have begun arriving in the markets in greater volume, prices remain high. They attribute this to recent prolonged rainfall, which damaged large areas of vegetable fields and has pushed up market prices.
A visit to Bogura’s Rajabazar, Fateh Ali Bazar, Khandar Bazar, Colony Bazar and several other local markets on Friday revealed an increased supply of new seasonal vegetables. However, the higher availability has not translated into reduced prices.
In the markets, Brinjal was selling at Tk100–120 per kg, local onions at Tk110, fresh spring onions at Tk80–100, green chillies at Tk140–160, beans at Tk120, ridge gourd at Tk80, and cucumber, bitter gourd and carrots at Tk100. Tomatoes were being sold at Tk140 per kg.
Potatoes were available at Tk20–25 per kg depending on quality, while new potatoes were being sold for Tk240–250. Pointed gourd, cauliflower and cabbage were priced at Tk50–60 per kg. Radish was selling at Tk40, local ginger at Tk160, garlic at Tk140 and dried chillies at Tk300 per kg. Similar price trends were reported in several other northern districts.
In Fateh Ali Bazar, eggs were being sold at Tk42 per hali (four pieces). Local chicken was priced at Tk520 per kg, broiler chicken at Tk160 and cockerel at Tk250.
Amzad Hossain, a resident of Satrashpur shopping in Rajabazar, said that no vegetable is available for less than Tk60–100. “Even though winter vegetables have arrived, they are being sold at high prices. At this time of year, prices should normally come down. These soaring rates have left low- and middle-income families in real distress,” he said.
