Several vehicles were set on fire in Dhaka and four other parts of the country early Thursday, as the banned Awami League carried out its announced “Dhaka Lockdown” programme.

The incidents occurred between late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence.

However, no casualties were reported.

Rashed Bin Khalid, the duty officer at the Fire Service control room, confirmed the developments on Thursday morning.

Fire Service sources said a human hauler (laguna) parked in front of Kamalapur Railway Station in Dhaka was torched around 2:45 am. Around 2:30 am, a bus was set ablaze in Rawail of Tangail. About an hour later, a truck parked near a paper mill in Gazaria of Munshiganj, was also burned.

In Gopalganj, arsonists set fire to a Pajero beside the Public Works Office and a pickup truck in front of the same office around 4:45 am. Another truck was torched in the Jajira area of Shariatpur.

Authorities said these attacks came after a wave of similar sabotage on Tuesday night and Wednesday, when 20 incidents were reported nationwide — including arson on 10 buses, a train, and a bank, as well as crude bomb and petrol bomb explosions at several locations.

Law enforcement agencies have been put on high alert across the country amid fears of further unrest linked to the outlawed party’s programme.
