Legendary Bollywood actor Manoj Kumar passed away early Friday morning at a hospital in Mumbai, leaving behind a rich legacy of patriotic cinema and decades of memorable performances. He was 87.
The iconic actor had been battling multiple age-related health issues for an extended period. Hospitalized since February, Kumar succumbed to heart complications and liver cirrhosis. His son, Kunal, confirmed that the actor breathed his last at 3 AM. The last rites will be held on Saturday morning.
News of his passing has cast a pall of sorrow over the Indian film industry. Tributes have poured in from across the nation, with actors like Akshay Kumar and filmmaker Karan Johar expressing their grief on social media. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also offered condolences, honoring Kumar’s contributions to Indian cinema.
Manoj Kumar made his Bollywood debut at the age of 20 with the film Fashion in 1957. He rose to fame with Kaanch Ki Gudiya (1961) and went on to deliver a series of acclaimed performances in patriotic films like Purab Aur Paschim and Kranti. Known for his deep sense of nationalism on screen, he earned the moniker “Bharat Kumar.”
