Newly elected Vice President (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Abu Shadik Kayem has said that the Dhaka University Journalists’ Union (DUJA) has shown Dhaka University the way at every crucial moment and that its cooperation will be vital to making DUCSU a truly representative student institution in the future.
He made these remarks on Thursday afternoon at a greeting exchange ceremony with the newly elected leaders of DUJA at the DUCSU cafeteria.
VP Kayem said that party syndicates have been formed at every level of the university administration. Initiatives will be taken to dismantle these syndicates and to formulate policies to regularise DUCSU elections.
“Just as the academic calendar of the university allocates time for semesters, so too should a mandatory time be set for DUCSU elections. We want elections to be held every year and DUCSU to become a truly democratic institution through the opinions and participation of students,” he said.
Recalling the role of the Journalists’ Union during the July Uprising, Kayem said DUJA had played a courageous role in the university’s policy-making stage.
“During Hasina’s tenure, no one dared to speak out against the repression of the Chhatra League on campus, but DUJA members protested through their writings. During the elections, journalists worked day and night to protect the trust of voters and the democratic process,” he added.
Meanwhile, DUCSU General Secretary SM Farhad announced the launch of a ‘digital complaint box’ to address students’ problems.
He also declared plans to improve the quality of food in the cafeteria by training staff and managers. The new leadership further pledged to bring all financial activities of DUCSU under audit.
Emphasising unity, Farhad said, “We do not want to divide anyone into Shibir, Muslim, Hindu or any other identity. We will work together with everyone. It is not about who was for or against us, but rather to work unitedly for the interests of the students.”
He added that DUCSU would create pressure for change wherever syndicates exist—whether in the cafeteria, registrar building, or research library.
During the discussion, DUJA President Mohiuddin Mujahid Mahi said that although DUCSU representatives are currently members of the Senate, they are not members of the syndicate.
“However, all decisions of the university come from the syndicate. Therefore, if DUCSU’s elected representatives are included in the syndicate, the interests of the students will be reflected more strongly,” he said.
