Rangpur Riders officials said on Monday that they have not included Shakib al Hasan in their upcoming Global Super League squad due to present circumstances.
Shakib, who was part of the previous government that was brought down during the student movement in August 2024, did not return home since the new government took over. He wished to end his Test career in Bangladesh but failed to do so as he was implicated in a lot of cases.
“Shakib Al Hasan is still one of the most valuable players, not only in Bangladesh, but in any franchise league of the world. It is not that we did not want him in the squad, but we know the situation of the country at this moment. Shakib still can feature in the starting eleven of any franchise team. But keeping the current situation in mind, we were not able to take him in the squad,” Riders team director Shanian Tanim told reporters during the jersey unveiling program at sports city on Monday.
“We did not receive any instructions from anyone regarding taking Shakib Al Hasan in the squad. It was a decision made by the team management as we were not sure about the outcome if we take him in the squad. As Sohan said, we only know the cricketer identity of Shakib Al Hasan, not his other identities. I think he also understands the situation as much as we do. It is true that the presence of Shakib Al Hasan solves a lot of problems in the squad, as we get him a batter, a spinner and a senior player. As a cricketer, we have no doubts over him, but as per the current circumstances of the country, the team management had to make the decision,” Shanian added.
