BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has criticized the ruling Awami League for destroying the country’s economy, education, development, and democracy. He expressed that the BNP intends to rebuild the nation through the implementation of its 31-point plan.
Speaking virtually as the chief guest at the district BNP’s bi-annual conference at the Narsingdi Government High School grounds on Sunday (February 16), Tarique Rahman said, “The Awami League has destroyed the country’s economy, education, development, and democracy. We want to rebuild the country by implementing our 31-point agenda.”
He further condemned the Awami League for mocking the election process and oppressing the opposition, accusing them of false cases, enforced disappearances, and murders of party leaders and activists. He alleged that the ruling party had refused to let people vote in order to maintain power. Tarique said, “For nearly 16 years, the autocratic Awami League and their associates suppressed the people’s right to speak, establishing a totalitarian regime using undemocratic methods.”
Recalling the fall of the autocratic regime, he emphasized that following a united student and public movement, the fascist government of Awami League and its leaders were forced to leave the country, particularly Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Tarique Rahman reiterated that BNP is working to ensure people’s rights to vote and to speak freely. He emphasized the need for a reform of the state structure and reaffirmed the party’s belief in multi-party democracy. He also stated that BNP had always stood by the people and would continue to do so in the future.
He praised the efforts of BNP’s founder, the late President Ziaur Rahman, for his initiatives to create job opportunities for the unemployed, particularly in foreign countries, and for introducing the garment industry, which became the country’s main source of export income. Tarique also highlighted steps taken for the advancement of agriculture and farmers’ welfare. Under the leadership of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, he pointed out that parliamentary democracy had been established in the country, alongside the expansion of press freedom, women’s education, and the creation of job opportunities through industrial development.
The conference was chaired by Narsingdi District BNP President, Belal Jahangir Alam, and the opening ceremony was led by BNP Chairperson’s Advisor Amanullah Aman. During the event, the national and party flags were hoisted, and guests released balloons and pigeons to mark the occasion.
Liberty News’ political correspondent states that special guests included BNP’s Khulna Division Organizing Secretary Anindya Islam Amit and Deputy Organizing Secretary Joyanta Kundu. Other prominent figures who spoke included District BNP General Secretary Monirul Islam, Senior Vice President Zulfiqar Ali Mondol, Organizing Secretary Shahriar Rizvi George, Joint General Secretary Ali Hasan, and President of Narsingdi Sadar Upazila BNP, Bir Muktijoddha Mustafizur Rahman Alek.
