Former US President Donald Trump believes that if Iran’s government refuses to negotiate over its nuclear program, its citizens should consider overthrowing the regime, according to the White House.
Speaking on Fox News, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, “If the Iranian regime refuses to come to a peaceful diplomatic solution — which the president is still interested in — why shouldn’t the Iranian people take away the power of this incredibly violent regime that has suppressed them for decades?”
The comments come in the wake of US airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities over the weekend, which Washington claims dealt “monumental damage.” The strikes marked a significant escalation in the conflict, as the United States joined Israel in a coordinated military campaign targeting Iran’s nuclear program.
Despite repeated denials from Tehran, Iran continues to face accusations from the US and its allies of pursuing nuclear weapons under the guise of a civilian program.
While the Biden administration has publicly maintained that regime change is not the goal, Trump stirred controversy on Sunday by posting, “Why wouldn’t there be a regime change???” on social media — diverging sharply from official messaging.
No independent assessments have yet confirmed the extent of the damage to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
