Following a crackdown on suspected illegal Bangladeshi residents in India, multiple push-in attempts have emerged at the Bangladesh-India border, raising questions over legality and humanitarian concerns.
Several recent incidents suggest that Indian authorities are attempting to push undocumented individuals—suspected of being Bangladeshi nationals—across the border into Bangladesh, especially from states like Gujarat and Rajasthan. Despite the absence of legal recognition for this practice, push-ins have long been an unofficial tactic, according to a report by the BBC.
Push-in refers to the act of physically forcing individuals across the border without any legal or diplomatic procedure. While India officially denies engaging in such practices, the trend has reportedly intensified in recent weeks.
In Gujarat and Rajasthan alone, police have identified over 1,000 individuals in the last three weeks, claiming they were living in India illegally. Some detainees from Gujarat were later brought to border regions and allegedly pushed into Bangladesh.
One high-profile attempt occurred on Thursday night at the Bijoynagar border in Brahmanbaria, where the Border Security Force (BSF) of India reportedly tried to force around 750 people into Bangladesh. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local residents resisted the effort, resulting in hours of tension along the frontier.
Sources suggest that over 600 detainees from Tripura and at least 148 from Rajasthan are part of planned push-in efforts. While India often repatriates minors or trafficking victims through formal channels, most other returns lack transparency or legal basis.
Security experts and rights organizations have voiced concern, calling for bilateral talks to address undocumented migration through legal, humane, and diplomatic means.
