A woman was severely assaulted in Gazipur’s Tongi area on Sunday after being accused of theft, prompting her transfer to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
The incident took place on Sunday morning in the Bhangaari Potti area of Tongi Bazar. The victim, Marzina Begum, works as a cleaner at Kamalapur Railway Station and collects recyclable materials for sale to scrap shops.
According to local sources, Marzina arrived at Bhangaari Potti to sell collected items when a shopkeeper, Liakat Hossain, accused her of stealing goods from in front of his shop. A heated argument ensued, during which Liakat allegedly attacked her with a sharp pair of scissors, causing serious injuries to her private area.
Witnesses rushed Marzina to Tongi Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital, where doctors treated her for deep wounds and heavy bleeding. She was later referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for specialized care.
Sub-Inspector Shahidul Islam of Tongi East Police Station described the attack as “tragic and shameful,” adding that legal action against the accused is underway.
Local residents expressed outrage over the brutal assault, calling for swift justice to ensure the safety and dignity of vulnerable workers in the community.
