National Citizen Party Convener Nahid Islam has announced that the ongoing political reform process will not be deferred to the next elected parliament.

“Instead, reforms must be implemented during the tenure of the current interim government,” Nahid said.

Speaking at a press conference held on Saturday (2 August) at NCP’s temporary office in the capital’s Banglamotor, Nahid outlined his party’s position following a month-long campaign across the country.

“Through our July march, we traveled to various parts of the country and listened to the people,” said Nahid, adding, “Based on those experiences, we will unveil a roadmap for the future of Bangladesh on Sunday (3 August).”

Referring to the party’s earlier movement, Nahid added, “It was from the Central Shaheed Minar on 3 August last year that we first raised the demand for the government’s resignation. We have always maintained that the struggle against fascism is not over. Our upcoming programme will define the complete framework of our vision for the state.”

Commenting on the draft of the “July Charter,” Nahid said, “We have already submitted a draft of the charter. We are aware that the interim government is also preparing its own version. However, the July Charter must have a legal foundation. We urge the government to officially declare the charter by 5 August.”

Criticising the lack of clarity from the National Consensus Commission, Nahid further said, “The commission has yet to clearly outline how the July Charter will be implemented. We will not allow the future of reforms to be left to the next parliament – they must begin under this current government.”

Addressing the concerns of youth and employment, Nahid also said, “The aspirations of the youth that emerged during the July uprising have not been fulfilled by the interim government. On Sunday, we will present our plans for employment and the future of the younger generation.”

Nahid also thanked BNP’s student wing, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, for postponing their planned rally at the Shaheed Minar.

“As both groups were scheduled to hold events on the same day, it could have led to traffic congestion in the capital. On behalf of the NCP, we express our apologies in advance for any inconvenience,” he said.
