In Gazipur, workers of a garment factory blocked two highways, demanding payment of overdue wages, causing a traffic jam for about half an hour.
Workers of a garment factory in Gazipur’s Bhogra Bypass area took to the streets on Monday, blocking both the Dhaka-Mymensingh and Dhaka-Tangail highways to protest unpaid wages. The workers, employed at Alima Textile Limited in the Basan Road area, claimed that many of them had not been paid for over three months.
There have been ongoing issues with irregular payments, including wages being split into installments rather than paid in full each month. Frustrated by the situation, the workers staged the roadblock at around 8:30 AM, disrupting traffic and creating a significant traffic jam.
One of the workers, Alam, stated, “The owners do not pay the workers regularly and break up the salary payments. This is why we had to block the highway.”
Upon receiving reports, military personnel, city police, and industrial police arrived at the scene and convinced the workers to clear the roads. Traffic resumed after about half an hour.
Liberty News’ local correspondent states that Gazipur Industrial Police Superintendent AKM Jahirul Islam stated, “Workers from a garment factory had blocked the highway in the Bhogra area for a brief period. We successfully convinced them to move, and traffic resumed. We are committed to ensuring that workers can peacefully express their legitimate demands while minimizing inconvenience to the public, especially as Eid approaches.”
