After a four-hour blockade on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Gazipur, workers have cleared the road, allowing traffic to resume. The blockade was sparked by the tragic death of a garment worker in a truck accident.
In Gazipur’s Sadar Upazila, workers from Golden Refits Garments Limited lifted their blockade on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, which had caused traffic disruption for four hours. The protest began at 8 a.m. on Wednesday after a female garment worker, Janatul Ferdous Tamanna (32), was killed in a truck accident while crossing the road on her way to work.
The workers demanded swift justice and several other changes, including compensation for the victim’s family and improvements in working conditions. They sought the arrest of the truck driver and called for the introduction of new policies, such as changing working hours, ensuring Eid holidays, and increasing safety measures in the factory.
At around 12 p.m., after discussions and assurances from the factory management, the workers decided to end the blockade and clear the road, allowing traffic to resume. Many passengers and drivers had faced significant difficulties due to the road closure, with some opting to walk to their destinations.
Liberty News’ local correspondent states that Gazipur’s Joydebpur Police Station Chief, Abdul Halim, confirmed that traffic flow was returning to normal after the workers cleared the road, following the resolution of their demands.
