The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors has approved $250 million in financing to help Bangladesh enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency across key public institutions.
The Strengthening Institutions for Transparency and Accountability (SITA) Project will support the government’s reform agenda, focusing on areas such as data transparency, revenue mobilisation, public investment management, procurement, and financial oversight.
The initiative will target five core government entities: the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, the National Board of Revenue, the Planning Division, the Bangladesh Public Procurement Authority, and the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General.
“This investment will help modernise public institutions and reduce corruption through the digitisation of processes,” said Gayle Martin, the World Bank’s Interim Country Director for Bangladesh. “It will improve the quality of public services and strengthen public trust.”
SITA aims to streamline operations, modernise tax systems, improve revenue collection, and upgrade electronic procurement and audit systems. The project is expected to enhance public service delivery and support evidence-based policymaking through more reliable data.
The government and the World Bank are also preparing a development policy credit to support broader economic reforms, which the Board is expected to review later this month. Together, these efforts aim to build institutional capacity and improve government effectiveness—a crucial foundation for long-term growth.
Since independence, the World Bank has committed over $45 billion in grants and low-interest credits to Bangladesh, making it one of the largest recipients of the Bank’s concessional support.
