Ahmad Rafique, a key figure in the 1952 language movement, returned to his home at Eskaton in the capital on Sunday evening, after six days at a hospital.
He was suffering from kidney-related complications and uncontrolled sugar levels. On 17 August, during a visit to his rented apartment, Rafique was found nearly unconscious and severely weakened.
The 95-year-old writer and physician lives alone at the Eskaton flat. He lost his wife in 2006 and has no children.
Rafique has edited and written over a hundred books. He has won numerous accolades including the Bangla Academy Award, and the “Rabindratattacharya” title from Kolkata’s Tagore Research Institute.
His only possessions include his vast personal library. The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has provided him with Tk500,000 in aid recently.
