BNP Standing Committee Member Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has said that none of the advisers in the current interim government have spoken out against Sheikh Hasina’s misrule. He said that even the Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has never uttered a single word against Hasina’s autocratic governance.
He made these comments on Saturday at a discussion and a program to honor the families of martyrs, marking the anniversary of the July Mass Uprising, held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) auditorium in Dhaka. The event was organized by the IEB.
Major Hafiz said, “None of the current advisers have spoken against Sheikh Hasina’s oppression and tyranny over the past 17 years. Only Law Adviser Asif Nazrul has occasionally made a few critical comments. Even Professor Muhammad Yunus — a revered figure in the nation whom we all respect — has never said a word against Hasina’s misrule.”
He further remarked that the primary reason the dreams of the martyrs of July-August remain unfulfilled is that the post-uprising government did not embrace the spirit of the martyrs. “Unfortunately, this country cannot accommodate its heroes,” Hafiz lamented.
Highlighting the recurring historical neglect of revolutionaries, Hafiz stated, “Throughout history, those who sacrifice their lives for revolutions are rarely honored afterward. Ordinary people lay down their lives time and again, while a cunning class of politicians reaps the benefits. They swoop in out of nowhere to claim all the credit and begin lecturing the public, leading the nation astray repeatedly.”
Claiming that BNP laid the groundwork for mass movements, Hafiz criticized, “Those who have never spoken a word against Sheikh Hasina are now basking in the spotlight. They are the ones preaching to the nation today.”
The BNP leader emphasized that people sacrificed their lives during the July-August movements for the establishment of democracy. “People did not die debating whether elections should be held under proportional representation (PR) or a constituency-based system. They gave their lives for democracy. And the only path to establishing democracy is through free and fair elections,” he asserted.
Hafiz criticized the current power-holders, saying, “Those who have once tasted the power throne now refuse to let go. They only twist and manipulate the system. Reforms are needed, but under a caretaker government to ensure free elections.”
He strongly condemned proposals to amend the constitution by unelected individuals, saying, “No history in the world has unelected persons amending a constitution. Yet, that’s what is being proposed here. How can they amend the constitution without the consent of the people and the parliament? We established this constitution with our blood in 1972; now they wish to discard it.”
Referring to the distortion of the Liberation War’s legacy, the decorated freedom fighter said, “In 1971, we had 80,000 freedom fighters. Now that number has magically grown to 250,000. The Awami League deserves credit for this inflation because whenever they got the chance, they stuffed the list with relatives and close associates.” He further accused, “They have looted thoroughly. Just two days before fleeing, Hasina’s family members were instructed to escape. Yet, none from the Sheikh family were apprehended.”
He also noted that the country’s law and order situation will never improve without elections. “Without an elected government, no one will invest in this country. What we’re seeing now is mobocracy and aristocracy. Imported intellectuals are lecturing us on how Bangladesh should run,” Hafiz commented.
