Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, is set to announce the long-awaited July Declaration this afternoon, marking the one-year anniversary of the mass uprising that led to the fall of a 16-year regime.

According to an official statement from the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing, Professor Yunus will read the July Declaration at 5 PM on Tuesday (August 5) at the South Plaza of the National Parliament. The event will be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV).

The declaration ceremony will be attended by representatives of various political parties, families of those killed in the uprising, and injured protestors. In addition, a day-long cultural program will take place at Manik Mia Avenue to commemorate July Uprising Day, and citizens of all ages have been invited to join the celebration.

The call for the July Declaration was first made on December 31, nearly five months after the August 5 uprising. Under the banner of the National Citizens’ Committee, student leaders from the Anti-Discrimination Movement demanded the formal issuance of the declaration, sparking national political discussion.

On December 30, the Press Wing of the Chief Adviser held an emergency press briefing to confirm that the declaration would be prepared based on national consensus. After several days of meetings and consultations, the interim government officially confirmed August 5 as the date for the announcement.

Sources close to the drafting committee revealed that the declaration will begin by referencing Bangladesh’s Liberation War of 1971, highlighting the struggle against Pakistan’s military regime. It will then mention the establishment of Baksal (one-party rule) in 1975, and the role of soldiers and citizens in ending that regime. The document will also include references to the anti-military movements of the 1980s, the 1990 mass uprising, and the 2007-08 military-backed caretaker regime, described as part of both domestic and international conspiracies.

The declaration is also expected to detail the systemic corruption, banking scandals, and money laundering during the Awami League’s time in power. It will outline the context of the popular uprising led by students, the formation of the interim government, commitments to free and fair future elections, and pledges to investigate disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and financial crimes committed under the previous regime.

Speaking at a recent event in Dhaka, Information Adviser Mahfuz Alam said, “This declaration will serve as an official and historical document of the July Uprising—capturing the series of events and political realities that led to the movement.”

The release of the July Declaration is seen as a pivotal moment for the country’s political transition and as a reflection of the people’s demand for justice, transparency, and democratic reform.
