In a landmark achievement for Bangladeshi tennis, young talent Zarif Abrar clinched the boys’ singles title at the World Tennis Tour Juniors J-30 tournament in Rajshahi, becoming the first player from the country to win a championship in this prestigious international event.
The tournament, held from 4–10 October at the Rajshahi Tennis Complex and approved by the International Tennis Federation, featured 38 boys and 20 girls from 10 countries, including Australia, China, India, Japan, Maldives, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and the United States.
In an impressive display of skill and composure, Zarif defeated Thailand’s top-seeded Napat Pattanalertphan in the final in straight sets, 7–6(3), 6–4. This victory marks the first time a Bangladeshi player has won a singles title in the tournament’s history—a feat hailed by the Bangladesh Tennis Federation as a moment of national pride.
Zarif, who has been training under Coach Alex in Florida, USA, returned to Bangladesh specifically to compete in the event and represent the country on the international stage.
While Zarif shone in the boys’ singles, no other Bangladeshi players reached the finals in the boys’ doubles, girls’ singles, or girls’ doubles categories. The boys’ doubles title was secured by a Thai pair, while Chinese players dominated the girls’ events.
Attention now shifts to Dhaka, where the next World Tennis Tour Juniors tournament begins this Saturday at the National Tennis Complex in Ramna. With a larger contingent of international players expected, Zarif will look to continue his winning form and bring further success to Bangladesh in the global tennis arena.
